چکیده

We revisit the fundamental issue of market provision of variety associated with Chamberlin, Spence, and Dixit-Stiglitz when Þrms sell multiple products. Both products and Þrms are (horizontally) differentiated. We propose a general nested demand framework where consumers Þrst decide upon a Þrm then which variant to buy and how much (the nested CES is a special case) . We use it to determine the market’s biases when Þrms compete in product ranges and prices. The market system attracts too many Þrms with too few products per Þrm: Þrms restrain product ranges to relax price competition, but this exacerbates over-entry.

Multiproduct Firms and Market Structure: An Explorative Application to the Product Life Cycle

We extend the standard Dixit-Stiglitz model of imperfect competition to allow for multiproduct firms. We fully endogenise market structure by determining both the number of varieties per firm and the number of firms in the industry. A crucial feature of the model is that firms internalise the effects of both intraand inter-firm competition in making their product range and pricing decisions. Th...

Loss Leading and Price Intervention in Multiproduct Retailing: Welfare Outcomes in a Second-Best World

We examine whether loss leading pricing strategies in multiproduct retailing should be a target of antitrust policy. Loss leading is modeled in the presence of imperfect competition and consumer information in a stage game framework. We show that price constraints, used as a second-best instrument, targeted at loss leading can interact with market imperfections to create distortions that can on...
